A Noise Consultants Ltd led study on airport noise reduction has been published by the European Commission.

A Noise Consultants Ltd led study on airport noise reduction has been published by the European Commission.

The study focusses on how European legislation on the management of airport noise (Directive 2002/49/EC and Regulation 598/2014) have been implemented by Competent Authorities at airports in the European Union. The study explores how the legislation has been used to help achieve or set noise reduction objectives, and how and whether the process of the ICAO Balanced Approach is being applied. The study ultimately considers whether there are grounds to revise the existing legislation to improve their effectiveness.

The study was carried out through a combination of online questionnaires and ad-hoc interviews, using qualitative and quantitative data collected from the Competent Authorities of 63 European major airports. Using this information, it was then possible to consider how the provisions of Directive 2002/49/EC and Regulation 598/2014 were implemented and how the provisions of this legislation worked alongside any associated practices and approaches used as part of their noise management framework. A legal review of the legislation was also prepared.

NCL was supported by Airport Noise Management Services Ltd, Acustica Ltd, Air Quality Consultants Ltd, Milleu Ltd, and ACCON GmbH.
