Salford University Acoustics Masterclass

21-11-2018

George Gibbs and James Trow of Noise Consultants were invited to present a technical masterclass for second, third and fourth year acoustics students at Salford University.

Both George and James are alumni of the University and were asked to cover topics that would be of interest and assistance to students looking to work in the acoustics industry.

George’s presentation was a summary of the mechanics and considerations associated with ground-borne vibration. His presentation covered the most common source of ground-borne vibration, along with the various assessment and calculation methodologies and mitigation options.

George included a summary of recent project work undertaken by Noise Consultants in the field of ground-borne vibration, including their assessment of likely cosmetic damage to buildings from large infrastructure related construction activities.

As an industry lead in aviation noise, James presented on his experience and knowledge of addressing noise as part of airport infrastructure projects. The presentation included an overview of the regulatory and policy considerations and assessment methodologies used by consultants when evaluating airport noise impacts.

James set out examples of the various noise control measures available to help mitigate, reduce and manage aircraft noise, pointing out the relevance of non-acoustic factors.

Noise Consultants are looking to further improve their links with further education establishments, such as the University of Salford, and are looking to offer placement year opportunities for students in 2019.
