NCL was invited by Dr Viktoriia Myroniuk, the Programme Leader for the MSc course for an afternoon of presentations focussing on aviation noise management and strategy. The MSc course covers modules such as Airline Planning and the Future of Urban Air Mobility, Airport Operations and Planning, Environmental Noise Measurements, and Modelling and Environmental Impact Assessment.
A total of three presentations were made by Piero, Malvina and Davide, who are members of NCL’s aviation acoustics team.
Davide gave an overview on aircraft noise, the noise modelling tools used by the industry to assess and predict airport noise, the effects of noise on the people’s health and the ICAO Balanced Approach to identify noise mitigation measures.
Malvina described how these are used for developing noise management strategies at airports, explaining how the European Noise Directive and the Balanced Approach Regulation provide a noise management framework for the European Union Member States.
Piero presented the results of the NCL led study on Airport Noise Reduction for the European Commission DG Environment, on the implementation of both END and BAR, providing an overview on how aircraft noise is currently being managed within the European Union Member States.
He concluded the lecture explaining how noise is part of the wider sustainability topic, discussing on the interdependencies between noise, carbon emissions and other air pollutants, and highlighting the importance of finding sensible trades-off to ensure effective sustainability in the aviation sector.
In their lecture Piero, Malvina and Davide stressed the importance of noise management for sustainable development of airports.
Noise Consultants welcomed this opportunity to provide this contribution to the MSc Sustainable Air Transport Operations and Planning at Salford University. It was a very engaging lecture with several interesting comments and questions from the students. We want to thank the British Aviation Group to put us in touch with Victoria Myroniuk, with who we organised and arranged this lecture. We hope that Victoria and her students enjoined it as much as we did and look forward to future contributions.
